As the planet heats up, our engines continue to work harder to keep us safe, but they also emit more polluting gases. We may have noticed how our world has changed over the last decade as a result of climate change, air pollution, and other environmental challenges. There isn’t enough time or space to rid the globe of fuel or technology. Looking closely, we can see that we engage in several activities that contribute to air pollution on a daily basis. According to the World Health Organization, nine out of ten people today breathe toxic air, which kills 7 million people each year. Air pollution has a negative impact on health, causing strokes, lung cancer, and heart disease. According to the researchers, particulate pollution has a greater influence on life expectancy than smoking. If nothing changes, the globe will face more major death problems, and many people will perish.
This is also a theme in the new Korean drama Black Knight. Staring with Kim Woo Bin, Black Knight becomes his first K-drama series after his hiatus. The series aired on the biggest streaming platform, Netflix on May 12, 2023, with 6 episodes. The series is based on Lee Yoon Kyun’s webcomic “Taekbaegisa” (published from 2016 to 2019). It is set in 2071, when the planet has been ravaged by deadly air pollution. This catastrophic problem claimed many lives, and barely 1% of the population survived. The government directs the people and divides them into strict social strata. People rarely leave their homes, and when they do, they don gas masks to protect themselves from the pollution. For their necessities, citizens rely greatly on parcel delivery services. Knights, or delivery drivers, transport parcels while also protecting them from robbers.
5–8 Knight Kim Woo-Bin (Knight 5–8) is a legendary knight. He is also an expert in physical combat. He meets refugee Yoon Sa-Wol (Kang You-Seok) and assists him in becoming a knight. The Knights get together to combat a regime that is attempting to exterminate humanity. They want to undermine the human classification system and ensure fairness for all citizens. So far, their lives have been harmed by a lack of oxygen and food owing to air pollution. Despite their restrictions, the knights confronted the government and took the lead in creating a better society for all.
Even though this is a fictional drama, the primary issues it tackles are the same as in real life. Air pollution is a major issue that is frequently discussed, and all countries are attempting to develop solutions to reduce air pollution, which is becoming increasingly severe. Climate change and air pollution are inextricably related; the main cause of climate change is fossil fuel burning, which is also a major contributor to air pollution, and attempts to limit one can enhance the other. The UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change cautioned that coal-fired electricity must be phased out by 2050 if global warming is to be limited to 1.5 degrees Celsius. Otherwise, we may face a catastrophic climatic crisis in the next 20 years.
Implementing the goals of the Paris Agreement to tackle climate change might save approximately a million lives per year by 2050 only by reducing air pollution. The economic benefits of reducing air pollution are significant: the health effects of air pollution are predicted to cost more than 4% of GDP in the 15 nations that generate the greatest greenhouse gas emissions. This year, WHO and partners will host the first Global Conference on Air Pollution and Health in Geneva from October 29 to November 1 to galvanize the globe to make big commitments to combat this issue. The conference will raise awareness of this rising public health issue and share knowledge and resources on the health risks of air pollution and how to mitigate them.
The debate over air pollution is not limited to countries and the WHO. Everyone on the planet must work together to eliminate air pollution. The Black Knight has provided an outline of how air pollution is affecting the earth’s condition. No longer are children allowed to play freely outside the house, and everyone is required to wear a protective mask. Real-world air pollution is also becoming increasingly concerning. So let us all work together to take care of our planet. Walking to work, driving an electric vehicle, composting and recycling waste, avoiding burning waste, utilizing renewable energy to power the home, checking daily air pollution levels, using clean energy to cook, and turning off lights and electronics when not in use are just a few examples.
These little efforts will help to protect our environment from air pollution. The black knight drama can also be used to learn more about the environment. Not only did Black Knight’s narrative inspire me to start writing this, but it also inspired me to be more concerned about the air pollution problem that we all confront. I hope we can all work together to save our loved ones from air pollution.
