The Haunting of Hill House

A casual reader will know by now that I enjoy a horror story. I’m also partial to ghost stories – but mostly for the laughs. So when I heard about a “Hill House” adaptation I was intrigued, to say the least.

I believe it was Shakespeare who once wrote, “To binge or not to binge?” And, had he been alive today, he surely would’ve been talking about this supernatural sensation. This show has everything – ghosts, family drama, more ghosts, and interior design choices that make you question, “Is Victorian Gothic making a comeback?”

From the mind of Mike Flanagan, this show teeters on the precipice of horror and drama, balancing perfectly like a tightrope walker wearing fuzzy slippers. It’s a family saga riddled with specters and simmering secrets. If Jane Austen had dabbled in horror, she might’ve come up with something resembling this – though I doubt Mr. Darcy would’ve looked as dashing whilst being haunted by ghoulish apparitions.

Our central characters are the Crain family, who move into the titular Hill House with the optimistic ambition of flipping it. A ’90s family trying to ‘flip’ a clearly haunted mansion is like trying to renovate a dragon’s lair into a bed and breakfast. Predictably, things go awry, and what unfolds is a complex tapestry of past traumas, lingering spirits, and some truly questionable wallpaper choices.

The narrative structure is as intricate as the house’s blueprints. Episodes wind back and forth between past and present, revealing fragments of the family’s traumatic stint at Hill House. It’s like piecing together a jigsaw puzzle during an earthquake. Just when you think you’ve got a handle on things, a new revelation shakes up your understanding. This isn’t just a show; it’s an interactive experience, forcing viewers to be as alert as a cat at a mouse convention.

Now, let’s address the ghostly elephant in the room. The apparitions and spirits in Hill House are not your run-of-the-mill, sheet-wearing, “Boo!” shouting phantoms. No, they’re as developed and intricate as the living characters. And the best part? The hidden ghosts sprinkled throughout the series. These spectral Easter eggs transform every scene into a game of supernatural ‘Where’s Waldo.’

Hidden Ghost

The family dynamics are portrayed with such realism that it’s easy to forget you’re watching a horror show. Arguments over inheritance, blame games, and icy silences – ah, nothing like supernatural events to bring out the mundane in all families! But beneath these squabbles lie poignant explorations of grief, guilt, and the age-old quest for closure.

The cast? Impeccable. Every actor delivers a performance so nuanced, you’d think they regularly attend family therapy with ghostly apparitions. Victoria Pedretti’s portrayal of Eleanor is especially riveting. She emotes with the kind of depth that makes you want to dive into the screen and offer her a comforting cup of chamomile tea.

A special shoutout to the production design team. Hill House itself is a marvel – an architectural behemoth that’s equal parts gorgeous and ghastly. It’s the kind of place you’d want to Airbnb for a weekend getaway, if only you didn’t value your soul.

“The Haunting of Hill House” is not just a show; it’s a masterclass in storytelling. It melds horror with heart, spirits with sentiment. It’s the kind of series that makes you clutch your blanket in fear, only to wipe away tears with it moments later.

In conclusion, dear reader, if you’re seeking a thrilling rollercoaster ride of emotions with a side of existential dread, look no further. “The Haunting of Hill House” is a symphony of specters, a ballet of boos, a…well, you get the drift. And remember, next time you think about renovating an old mansion, maybe… don’t? Especially if the walls whisper and the doorknobs have a penchant for turning on their own. Happy binging!
